FAQs
Who is your biggest idol in journalism?
“Out of the many journalists I look up to in my career, I think my biggest idol is Anderson Cooper. Watching Anderson on CNN my whole life and reading his books, I’ve really grown to appreciate his style of storytelling. Anderson shows that he cares about the people he is interviewing and he wants to tell the story the best way he can.”
How do you cope with the stress of tight deadlines?
“When a big story breaks and I have to get a full report ready to air.. my adrenalin kicks in. Being on a deadline gives me such a rush. I use the stress of the deadline as more of a motivator. The story excites me and the only pressure I feel is making sure I can tell it accurately and with an impact. This type of stress is why I love what I do.”
What made you want to become a journalist?
“From a young age, I always consumed myself with what was going on in the world. Everyday, my family would gather around the dinner table and watch the 6 o’clock news cast. I always wanted to be involved in the media industry (cinematographer to be exact), but when I started learning about the issues outside my small town, I knew being a journalist was the best opportunity to share the stories of others.”
Where do you see yourself in 20 years?
“In 20 years, I hope to see myself being a correspondent or an overseas reporter. With my love for travel and international affairs, I hope I can bring local stories from other countries to the forefront of news in North America. In 20 years, I hope to have made a name for myself and inspire others to follow their dreams.”
Out of the stories you have covered, do you have a favourite?
“I have covered a variety of stories. From weather storms and politics, to murder and natural disasters. Each story brings its own importance and uniqueness. I wouldn’t say I have a favourite story, but I would say international stories are my favourite to cover. A lot of people are focused on the news in their own community, but I think it's important to also search out what is happening around the world.”
What do you do in your free time?
“In my free time, I love to read, scrapbook, watch movies/tv shows/documentaries, and spend time outside with my family and friends. I also cannot go a day without cuddles from my pets. Sports are a big part of my life and hope to continue to play playing broomball around the world for many more years. I dabble in video games and photography. I also love to travel and learn everything I can about other cultures and their history.”
